Texas Tech and the student rental belt

The blocks around Texas Tech run on August-to-July leases signed the previous autumn, a year before move-in. That long lead time is an advantage if you use it: a request made when you sign, with documentation attached, is straightforward, while a request made in August competes with a thousand move-ins.

University-owned housing runs its own process through student disability services. The private market around campus does not, and its leasing offices are frequently staffed by students who have never handled an accommodation request. Escalate politely to the property manager rather than arguing with the front desk.

Blanket no-pet policies

Lubbock has an unusually high concentration of small landlords with absolute no-pet policies, often because they rent to students and have been burned. A no-pet policy is not an answer to an accommodation request; the whole point of a reasonable accommodation is that it is an exception to a policy. But expect to be told no first, and expect to have to put it in writing.

Guarantors and parents

Most student leases here carry a parental guarantor, and parents often make the request on the student's behalf. A housing provider deals with the tenant. If you are over 18 and on the lease, the request should come from you, and the therapist's letter concerns you.
