UTA runs both university-owned residence halls and apartment-style housing, and the private market around campus is built around student leases. The distinction matters. A request for university-owned housing goes through the disability services office and is handled as a disability accommodation, often under both the Fair Housing Act and Section 504. A request for a private apartment goes to the leasing office as an ordinary reasonable accommodation.

Students frequently send a therapist's letter to the wrong office and then wait. Ask which process you are in before you submit anything, and if it is university housing, expect a form of their own.

Roommate and per-bed leases

Per-bed leasing is standard in the student blocks, which means an accommodation affects people who did not sign up for it. An operator can consider a genuine competing need — a roommate with a documented severe allergy, for example — and look for a solution such as a unit transfer. What it cannot do is treat a roommate's preference as a reason to deny.

Short-term rental pressure

Proximity to the stadiums has pushed a share of Arlington's housing into short-term rental use, and the residue is a lot of properties with unusually strict rules about animals, noise and guests. Those rules are contractual, not legal limits on an accommodation, and a professionally managed property still has to run the analysis.
